What's on for your summer Ballarat?

As is often the case, there is never a dull moment in Ballarat over the summer months! 

Once you have recovered from the busyness and fun of the festive season, check out some of these great ideas to get out and about in Ballarat!

26-31 December – 70th Annual Jazz Convention

On 26th December 2015 the 70th Australian Jazz Convention will transform Ballarat, Victoria, into the centre of Australian Jazz for one fantastic week.

The 70th AJC will present premium Australian jazz across various venues in around Lydiard Street from Boxing Day until New Year's Eve. Musicians will jam in parks, on the street, and in the pubs in addition to programed performances accessible through registration for the week or a day pass.

27 December – Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club Christmas Track Carnival

The Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club Christmas Track Carnival is held on the 27th December in conjunction with Cycling Victoria. The event aims to cater for riders of all ages and abilities and will be offering cash and prizes to a value in excess of $4000.

Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club expect to receive in excess of 150 entries, of which at least half will be junior riders from both the city and the country.

27-29 December – Piano Recitals at the Art Gallery of Ballarat

4 x 20 minute piano recitals will be scheduled each day from 4.15pm to 5.45pm at the Art Gallery of Ballarat in the James Oddy Gallery. 

Whilst this is a free event, the venue cannot permit more than 120 people in at any one time. For this reason it is a ticketed event and each person is permitted one ticket for one day of the recitals.

Current musicians scheduled to perform include Bruce Gourlay, Bob Sedergreen, Margie Fullerton, Rachel Hamilton, David Goodwin, Steve Sedergreen, Grant Roberts, Kim Harris with three other exceptional pianists yet to confirm.

26 December – 26 January – Timeless Summer Fun at Sovereign Hill

Step back in time as Sovereign Hill celebrates summer fun with a full-program of special school holiday activities, from a pantomime to panning for real gold. Families can strike it rich, and discover what’s made Sovereign Hill the 2015 RACV People’s Choice for Favourite Regional Attraction and Victoria’s Major Tourist Attraction for the second year running.

During the holidays, it’s gold fever! Visitors can witness a $150,000 gold pour, pan for real gold, and strike it rich just like the ladies and gents of the goldfields. From an underground mine tour adventure, to candle-making and bowling, there’s something for every member of the family.

6-10 January 2016 – Cycling Open Road National Championships

The Championships begins on January 6 where you can catch all the high-octane action of the Wednesday evening criteriums in the Ballarat CBD!

After the criteriums open the 2016 Mars Cycling Australia Road National Championships with a bang, all eyes will turn to the race against the clock on Thursday 7 January. The Time Trial course is based in Buninyong, and is an ‘out-and-back’ style time trial along Buninyong-Mt Mercer Road.

For the weekend’s road races, there are no shortages of great places to catch the action. From the start line, to the feed zone and of course the top of Mt Buninyong at the KOM where the atmosphere and racing will be electric!
